What Does an Avionics Engineer Do?
Avionics engineers handle all electrical and electronic systems on an aircraft, including:
With modern aircraft becoming more computerized and sensor-driven, avionics engineers are in high demand by airlines worldwide.
Avionics and Other Engineering Disciplines
It is important to note that airframes engineers, engines engineers, and avionics engineers work together. Avionics systems are used to control and monitor engine and airframe operations, meaning that without one, the other cannot function effectively. Aviation is a collaborative industry where every specialty plays a critical role in ensuring aircraft safety and efficiency.
Avionics Specializations and Licensing
Avionics engineering is divided into several specialized fields. Professionals in these areas receive an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer’s License (AMEL – Category ‘X’) upon qualification. The more specializations an engineer qualifies for, the more licenses they can obtain. Some of the main AMEL ‘X’ categories include:
- CAT ‘X’ Electrical (AC/DC)
- CAT ‘X’ Radios
- CAT ‘X’ Instruments
- CAT ‘X’ Compass
- CAT ‘X’ Radar
Kenya Aeronautical College offers a Diploma in Avionics Engineering, which serves as the required academic qualification before progressing to an internship and professional licensing exams.
Important Note:
- A diploma is the first step toward becoming a licensed professional.
- You must complete academic training before qualifying for professional certification.
